What are immunizations?

Immunizations, or vaccinations, are preventive medicine treatments that often contain weakened or dead germs, mRNA, or other substances. They stimulate your child’s immune system to reduce their chance of becoming ill or developing a disease. Many vaccines are available as injections, liquid taken by mouth, or nasal mists your child simply breathes in.

What are the benefits of immunizations?

The main benefits of childhood immunizations are a stronger immune system and a low risk of contracting certain illnesses or diseases. If your child does become sick after getting a vaccine, chances are their symptoms won’t be severe. Many schools, camps, and sports organizations require childhood vaccines for participation.

Which immunizations are right for my child?

Whether and when to vaccinate your child is entirely up to you. Your pediatrician reviews the benefits and possible risks of each immunization to help you make an informed decision about your child’s health. At Smart Care Pediatrics, we follow the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) guidelines for recommendation and scheduling of vaccinations..

What should I expect during immunization administration?

During immunization administration, your child rests comfortably on a chair, exam table, or on a parent’s lap. A Smart Care Pediatrics medical assistant either administers a mist for your child to breathe, provides a liquid for your child to swallow, or gently injects vaccine substance into your child’s arm or leg. While they may feel a slight pinch during needle insertion, it lasts just a second or two.

What happens after my child receives a vaccine?

There’s no downtime after your child receives a vaccination, so they can resume normal activities immediately, including going back to school. However, some vaccinations cause mild, temporary side effects like fatigue, muscle aches, or a low-grade fever. Your child may also have swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites. They may need extra rest the day they receive certain vaccines. Call the Smart Care Pediatrics office if you notice new or worsening side effects. Some immunizations require more than one dose to work effectively. Our office will let you know when to schedule your child’s next set of vaccinations.
