Is ear piercing right for my child?
Wearing earrings might bring joy to your child, but the decision to have your child’s ears pierced is entirely up to you and your family. It’s a safe procedure, but you and your child must be willing to follow all post-procedure instructions to keep their ears clean and reduce the risk of infection. At Smart Care Pediatrics, we require that a child be at least 2 months of age and have received their first set of vaccines (including tetanus, or DTAP) in order to be eligible for ear lobe piercing.
What should I expect during the procedure?
Your child relaxes on a comfortable chair, exam table, or on a parent’s lap when getting their ears pierced at Smart Care Pediatrics. Our Pediatric Nurse Practitioner numbs the treatment area, if needed, to make the process simple and painless. Your child’s ear lobes are cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. A mark is placed on your child’s ear where you’d like the piercing to be. A specialized device is used to puncture your child’s ear with a sterile earring of your choice.Getting your child’s ear lobes pierced is a very quick procedure.
What happens after ear piercing?
After getting your child’s ears pierced, it’s essential to keep the ears clean and follow all post-care instructions. Your child’s ears might feel tender or sore for the rest of the day, but taking over-the-counter pain medicine can alleviate some of their discomfort. Use topical medicine as directed and avoid removing the earrings for at least six weeks.. Call the office if your child has signs of an infection, such as pus, redness, or worsening discomfort.
